An elegant Edwardian conservatory with modern performance
With more than 50 years’ experience, FineLine is one of Kent’s most well-established home improvement companies and one of the longest serving installers in the UK.
The longer days of summer are the perfect time to seamlessly merge the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.
One of the best ways to achieve this is via an extension. Modern extensions are designed to open up your home and provide a unique opportunity to create a spacious, light-filled environment.
A perfect example is a stunning single-storey extension for a gorgeous South East property that proved a hit with both the home’s owners and the rest of the neighbourhood.
Why was FineLine chosen for the project?
The homeowner saw one of FineLine’s 11 South East showrooms when they were out, had a look around and spoke to the team, and were impressed with everything they saw and heard.
What was the property brief/objective?
The homeowner had an existing conservatory, but they deemed it to be too small and they wanted to extend their living space and add a room onto their lounge. The FineLine operations team visited the property and advised that a bigger conservatory could be added for a much bigger, and lighter space.
What products were chosen and why?
The FineLine teams solution was a conservatory with an Edwardian design to add the extra space the homeowner desired. The ridged roof and rectangular floor maximises the space, while the flat front makes it a bright and inviting room. The sloping roof gives the illusion of more space while its structure is perfect against the elements. To flood the space with even more natural light, the single-storey extension was combined with a glass roof and a stunning set of bi-fold doors for a seamless transition to the beautiful garden thanks to their streamlined opening system and slimline frames. It also features bespoke sliding sash windows which allowed the homeowner to retain the property’s original character.
Is there anything else that helps with performance?
The glass roof features high performance glass which achieves U values as low as 1.0W/(m²K) for greater thermal performance to help save money on heating bills. The glass is solar controlled to deflect the heat of the sun and roof vents open to ensure it achieves a comfortable temperature. The glass is also self-cleaning, meaning zero maintenance. The sliding sash windows provide superior thermal capabilities, weather-resistance and home security and a movable panel allows the homeowner to easily control ventilation.
The final assessment?
The homeowner was delighted with the installation and the result. Its elegant design complements the property beautifully and acts as a real focal point. It provides a fantastic light-filled space that the family can enjoy as a place to relax or entertain, and an ideal balance for letting the light in while feeling like a full extension.
What are your hints and tips for those looking at a new conservatory?
Modern conservatories are great for providing more space and give the feeling that the new extension is bigger than it is. Make sure the design and style fits in with your homes character and aesthetics, and deciding on what it will be used for, whether a kitchen extension, playroom or home office, is paramount. A glass roof with energy efficient glazing will instantly brighten up the space without the room becoming cold, so it can be used all year round, while a solid roof, which features tiles combined with roof windows, provides plenty of light with added privacy. For the perfect transition to your outside space, aluminium bi-fold doors open up a whole wall to create unobstructed outside views and they can be incorporated easily into conservatory design. A conservatory opens up a world of possible ways to maximise your living space – the choice is uniquely yours.
